At 16, Kalief was arrested in 2010 on suspicion of stealing a backpack and held in Rikers for 3 years without a trial or conviction for lack of bail. Nearly two years of this was in solitary confinement. He was released in 2013, but said “Before I went to jail, I didn't know about a lot of stuff, and, now that I'm aware, I'm paranoid. I feel like I was robbed of my happiness.” He took his life in 2015. Learn more here or see this Netflix documentary.
